His iconic baritone voice has been stilled.
CityNews anchor Mark Dailey, aka The Voice, died Monday in Toronto after a battle with cancer, aged 57 years.
Dailey first told Citytv viewers on September 8, 2010 that he had been diagnosed with kidney cancer.
Six years earlier, he successfully battled prostate cancer, and became a spokesman for Prostate Cancer Canada.
But the Citytv veteran, who first joined the Toronto TV station in 1979, succumbed Monday to his second battle with cancer, surrounded by his wife, Kim Dailey, and his daughter, Nicole.
Friends and colleagues on Monday paid tribute to Dailey for being able to capture the very essence of Citytv vocally while also instilling his news reports with drama, authority and humor.
“Mark was quite literally the voice of Citytv and CityNews. He was smart, funny and a brilliant broadcaster. He touched so many lives,” Tina Cortese, vice president, news/executive producer at Citytv, said in a statement.
Dailey was a mainstay in Toronto living rooms as a TV anchor, but it was ultimately his robust vocal delivery that endeared him over a generation to his Citytv audience.
“It’s a very difficult day for Citytv and a sad day for Torontonians,” she added.
