Chef’s language too salty

Gordon Ramsay

BBC Canada has been slapped on the wrist for airing Gordon Ramsay’s salty language too early in the evening. The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council said Wednesday that The F-Word, a British cooking show which features the famously short-tempered chef, breached the CAB code of ethics when it aired last spring at 8 p.m.

The episodes were preceded by a viewer advisory and an 18+ ratings icon. But the CBSC noted in its ruling that such precautions don’t get broadcasters ‘off the hook’ with respect to the rules, including its prohibition against running shows aimed at adults, unedited, before the so-called watershed hour of 9 p.m.

‘If using ‘fuck’ or one of its derivatives is essential to the character of the program, as would appear to be the case in the matter at hand, the sole choice is a post-9:00 pm broadcast,’ said the CBSC.
