The strong showing of two Canadian teams in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs is giving CBC something to celebrate, as ratings continue to climb for Hockey Night in Canada.

The pubcaster averaged three million-plus viewers for game five of both the Montreal/Pittsburgh and Vancouver/Chicago series over the weekend. (All numbers 2+ and based on PPM data.)

The 3.04 million viewers for Saturday’s game between the Canadiens and defending champion Penguins marked the highest average audience for a round two game on CBC since 2004. The series also features ratings draw and Nova Scotia native Sidney Crosby, who captains the Pittsburgh team.

Numbers are expected to get a further boost with the Canadiens forcing a deciding seventh game in their series, set for Wednesday, while Vancouver plays game six on Tuesday.
