News veteran Kevin Newman is stepping down as anchor of Global National, Canwest announced on Friday. His last newscast will be on Aug. 20.
Newman, 50, who joined the Global newsroom 10 years ago, is leaving the broadcaster for an ‘extended period of travel and relaxation,’ according to a memo to staff from Canwest interim president Peter Viner.
‘It is an understatement to say he will be deeply missed. More than just an anchor, his leadership as executive editor of Global National has helped define what our news organization stands for,’ said Viner, adding that Newman helped build viewership of Global’s flagship newscast to more than one million viewers a night.
The Toronto native will also complete a series of documentaries for Global before his departure. He joined the broadcaster after stints at CTV, CBC and ABC News. Newman has garnered various accolades for his work including two Gemini Awards in 2005 and 2006 for best anchor.
Viner said the search for a new national anchor is ‘well underway.’
