3D TV: Seeing is believing

3D TV ‘is coming like a freight train,’ says Marc Séguin, CFTPA VP feature film and new technology, who notes it was ‘the big buzz’ at last month’s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

So in keeping with this year’s consumer theme, Séguin has made 3D a fourfold attraction at Prime Time.

‘We are rigging our main ballroom to project 3D content on the large screen,’ notes Séguin, adding that ‘XpanD, AMZ Design, Doremi, and especially James Stewart from Geneva Film helped us pull this all together.

‘The second thing is we’ve invited many companies to come and showcase their new 3D technologies,’ Séguin explains of a new Prime Time initiative. ‘From Sony to LG, to gaming companies… so delegates can walk into, let’s say the delegate lounge, [and] they can see it and witness it on the spot, and ask questions. We’re hoping to have representatives from Sony, LG, Panasonic and Samsung showcase what they rolled out at the Consumer Electronics Show.

‘Third, we’re going to imbed 3D content on the iPod touch or iPhone devices [used for the conference program],’ says Séguin, so each conference delegate will get a taste of mobile 3D.

And lastly, if show-and-tell isn’t enough, there’s a 3D TV panel to discuss ‘the coming format, its opportunities, and even what is being reported as its biggest problem,’ which is a ‘lack of available content,’ says Séguin. No wonder – 3D televisions won’t hit the market until later this year!
