Dolan up for a Golden Globe

MONTREAL — Quebec filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s acclaimed J’ai tué ma mère (I Killed My Mother) is the lone Canadian entry on the list of 69 semi-finalists for the Golden Globe Awards — a fact that doesn’t surprise his distributor, K-Film Amerique’s Louis Dussault.

‘The two screenings we had in Hollywood went extremely well. And his personal life story is like a fairy tale, and Americans like fairy tales,’ says Dussault of the 20-year-old Dolan. ‘Not only is he a self-made man, he’s a self-made really young man. We could already make a film about his story.’

‘And he has made a film that is both very modern and appeals to a wide section of people. Suburban audiences love this film as much as downtown ones.’

Dolan burst onto the international film scene at Cannes last May — since then his moving drama about the relationship between a single mother and her son has picked up 18 international awards.

Also on the list for the Golden Globes, which is administered by The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, is Pedro Almodovar’s Broken Embraces, Japanese police tale Nobody to Watch Over Me, French prison film A Prophet, indigenous Aussie drama Samson & Delilah and German director Michael Haneke’s stark, much-lauded The White Ribbon.

The list of 69 will be narrowed down to five finalists nominated for best foreign film — to be announced, along with the nominees in all other categories, on Dec. 15.

The 67th annual Golden Globes is in Beverly Hills on Jan. 17.

J’ai tué ma mère was also submitted as Canada’s official entry for consideration for the best foreign film Oscar.

Earlier this week, it landed on the Toronto International Film Festival’s list of the Top 10 Canadian films of 2009. The film is slated for theatrical release across Canada in February.
