Canadian movies and TV shows are selling well overseas, according to new data from Telefilm Canada. The funder on Thursday released its annual report on international markets, showing a 21% jump in overall activity at the markets where it pitched its tent in 2008.
Sales and presales came close to $14 million in ’08, says Telefilm, to which it added another $71 million in ‘likely sales’ that are expected to close ‘as a direct result’ of market negotiations — for a grand total of $85 million. The same report for 2007 put the number at $70 million.
As usual, MIPTV was the most successful market in terms of how many attendees made sales — 96% of companies that took part in the French market saw some sales activity. MIPTV also saw the highest volume of sales, ringing up more than $5.2 million. Other markets that Telefilm attends include the European Film Market Berlinale, the Hong Kong Film Mart, Cannes and MIPCOM.
Coproduction and co-venture partnerships increased by 20% over the previous year, with 65 Canadian companies involved in 115 deals with 21 different countries, reported to be worth over $23 million.
