Alongside post-apocalyptic drama The Road, comedy Old Dogs and actioner Ninja Assassin, the holiday-themed Coopers’ Camera arrives Friday in two cities through Boutique Films, the distribution shingle of Nicholas Tabarrok and John Kozman.
The quirky comedy, from Toronto director Warren Sonoda, opens on one screen each at Toronto’s AMC Yonge/Dundas and Vancouver’s Granville theaters, with plans to expand in December.
It follows a dysfunctional family’s Christmas, seen through the eyes of its youngest member. Coopers’ Camera features Jason Jones and Samantha Bee of The Daily Show, and Canuck comedy veterans Dave Foley and Peter Keleghan.
Viggo Mortensen-starrer The Road, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival this year, opens on 23 screens in key cities through Alliance Films. It follows a man and his son’s expedition through a burned and barren America.
Disney will push the first full week of Old Dogs, with Robin Williams and John Travolta, on a reported 3,300 screens in North America, while Warner Bros. has Ninja playing on 2,500 screens. Rounding out the week’s wide releases is the family animation Fantastic Mr. Fox with roughly 2,000 prints through Fox.
Also opening Friday:
• E1 Entertainment has the anthology film New York I Love You — which joins several love stories set in the Big Apple — playing in limited release in Toronto and Montreal
• Robert Siegel, who penned last year’s acclaimed The Wrestler, makes his directorial debut on the sports dramedy Big Fan, bowing at Toronto’s AMC Yonge and Dundas theater via VSC. The film is already playing in Ottawa and will also screen at next month’s Whistler Film Festival.
