World Series a winner for Sportsnet

The 2009 World Series saw a ratings rebound on Rogers Sportsnet and U.S. broadcaster Fox, as the New York Yankees captured their 27th title in a six-game battle with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The series is up 65% versus 2008 on Sportsnet, and averaged 742,000 viewers per game according to BBM Canada’s new Portable People Meters. Last year’s average per game was 450,000. (All numbers 2+.)

The sixth and final game on Nov. 4 generated a series-high 853,000 viewers as the popular Yankees powered past the former World Series champs Phillies 7-3 to win the coveted title.

Over on Fox, the final game of the series scored 22.3 million viewers in the U.S., with a six-game average 19.4 million viewers — a 39% increase over 2008, according to Variety. The numbers are the highest in five years, while last year’s series between the Phillies and Tampa Bay drew record low viewership.
