Invincibles sweeps TV awards

The third and final season of Radio-Canada’s hit show Les Invincibles has swept the French-language TV awards, the Prix Gémeaux.

The show by Productions Casablanca, which follows the lives of four boy-men on the cusp of 30 struggling to grow up, picked up six trophies — including best dramatic series, screenplay, director for Jean-François Rivard and actress for Catherine Trudeau, who played Lyne, the bossy girlfriend the show’s dedicated fans loved to hate.

Les hauts et les bas de Sophie Paquin from Sphère Média Plus, the SRC series about a single mother who runs a talent agency, picked up five prizes including best writing in a comedy series.

The final season of the popular TVA soap opera Annie et ses hommes, also produced by Sphère, snagged four awards, including Gémeaux trophies for best soap and best actor for Denis Bouchard.

The best comedy series went to the SRC title Les Parent, while talk show Tout le monde en parle picked up its fourth consecutive people’s choice prize.

The gala, hosted by TV personality Véronique Cloutier, also included a tribute to television producer Carmen Bourassa, creator of kids shows Passe-Partout and Toc Toc Toc. Bourassa received the Grand Prix, a lifetime achievement honor, in recognition of her contribution to French-Canadian children’s programming.

Conspicuous by their absence were many hit TVA network shows. Although it allows the independent producers it works with to submit nominations, TVA doesn’t participate in the Gemeaux awards process — maintaining that the Academy is out of touch with popular tastes and is biased in favor of SRC.
