In 2006, B.C. filmmaker Corey Adams produced a short film called Harvey Spannos for Fuel TV in the U.S. It won him a $1 million production grant to make a feature. He then teamed with co-writer/director Alex Craig and cooked up the story for Machotaildrop, a fantasy adventure comedy set in a world where skateboarding is celebrated everywhere.

To help create a classical look for this fantasy world, much of the shooting took place in Budapest, Hungary. ‘It was always part of the plan to shoot in eastern Europe,’ says Craig, ‘partly to maximize our budget, but also to get as many great locations as we could.’

With a total budget of $1.4 million, ‘we’ve really done a lot with our money,’ says producer Oliver Linsley. ‘We probably shot in the neighborhood of 60-plus days.’

But shooting in Budapest was not without its difficulties. ‘The words ‘language barrier’ came up a lot,’ says Adams.
