Dancing continues to score big ratings on CTV, which last week premiered the second season of So You Think You Can Dance Canada.
The homegrown version of the reality competition peaked at over 1.3 million people (2+) on Tuesday, winning the 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. timeslot. Nationwide, the episode, which featured auditions from Toronto, averaged 1.08 million, according to BBM Nielsen numbers released by the network.
The ratings are slightly higher than for the first season debut, which peaked at 1.25 million.
The genre of dance-themed realities, however, has yet to peak according to media buyer Kim Dougherty of OMD Canada. ‘We probably have a solid year left,’ before the numbers for such shows plateau, she says. ‘People love them and networks are riding on those coattails and making more shows.’
Dancing with the Stars, also on CTV, has doubled the number of celebs that will participate in its next season, starting Sept. 21, while America’s Best Dance Crew on MuchMusic just began a fourth season and for the first time is allowing Canadian viewers to participate in voting.
The American version of So You Think You Can Dance wrapped on CTV on Aug. 6. to 1.8 million viewers.
Such numbers are no doubt boosted by the lack of stiff competition during the sluggish summer months, though Dougherty notes that they could be ‘scheduled anytime’ and would still be successful.
Fox apparently agrees, and will air season six of the American version in September, just over a month after wrapping season five.
