Canada’s film awards bid goodbye to Toronto this year and will move to Ottawa for the 29th edition of the film fete, the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television announced on Wednesday.
It’s the first time the nation’s capital will host the Genies, to be held at the Canadian Aviation Museum on April 4. Nominees will be announced next month. Canwest is back on board as broadcast partner.
‘It’s fitting that Ottawa should host our celebration of Canada’s finest films and filmmakers,’ commented Academy CEO Sara Morton in a release, noting that the Genies are a ‘true national celebration.’
Sarah Polley’s Away from Her and David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises grabbed the lion’s share of the prizes at the event last year, held at Toronto’s Metro Convention Centre.
