Shaftesbury Films has put Kelly Rowan (In God’s Country, Eight Days to Live) and John L’Ecuyer (In God’s Country, Prom Queen) to work again on The Good Times Are Killing Me, an MOW now shooting in Toronto for CTV.
Produced by Peter Meyboom and Laura Harbin, the conspiracy-minded thriller has Rowan as an American lawyer who is looking to sink her teeth into a controversial court case that could trigger a political scandal. But when she wakes up in an alcohol rehab center in Britain, she becomes convinced there are forces conspiring against her, and she must find a way to gain back control of her life.
Rowan shares the screen with Rupert Graves (V for Vendetta, Death at a Funeral), Vincent Walsh (Instant Star, ReGenesis) and Aaron Abrams (Young People Fucking, Cinderella Man).
L’Ecuyer directs from a script by Cris Cole (The Bill). The project shares a title with, but is otherwise unconnected to, a book and off-Broadway musical from cartoonist and author Lynda Barry.
‘As an audience, you are really going on a journey questioning what is real, what’s the truth,’ says Shaftesbury chairman and CEO Christina Jennings.
Meanwhile, the Toronto shop has wrapped Diverted, a fictionalized MOW about the passengers on board a plane heading to New York City who are rerouted to Gander, NL following the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
The cast includes Shawn Ashmore (the X-Men franchise, Terry), starring as an air traffic controller, David Suchet (The Bank Job), Joanne Whalley (Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis) and Colin Buchanan (Dalziel and Pascoe).
Written by Tony Marchant (The Whistleblowers), the film is directed by Alex Chapple (Law & Order). Shaftesbury’s Harbin and Paul Pope of St. John’s, NL-based Pope Productions share producer credits.
The movie, which was shot over four weeks in St. John’s and Hamilton, ON, shines the spotlight on how strangers come together in times of crisis, and a small Atlantic community opening their hearts and homes to about 6,500 displaced travelers.
‘It’s very much about the human spirit, the human condition,’ Jennings says. ‘It’s how in the middle of something so horrible can be something that is so wonderful.
Airdates for the MOWs have not been announced.
