The Gemini Awards are coming back to Toronto, and will hand out awards to the best in English-Canadian TV over four nights this fall, airing the big night on Canwest’s E! channels and on Showcase.
Three nights of industry awards will be held Oct. 20 through Oct. 22 at the Liberty Grand, an event hall near Lake Ontario, to be followed a month later by a Nov. 28 gala at the John Bassett Theater, which is part of the Metro Toronto Convention Center.
Nominations for the awards will be announced on Aug. 26.
The last two gala nights were held in Regina (2007) and Richmond, B.C. (2006) as part of an effort by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television and then-broadcasters CBC and Global, respectively, to breathe some fresh air into the Geminis and to broaden the appeal of the awards to both the public and industry outside of Toronto.
E! stations operate in or near Vancouver, Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Montreal, limiting the over-the-air reach of the gala.
‘Toronto is a vibrant city and a key production center, home to many of Canada’s finest television programs,’ said Academy CEO Sara Morton in a statement. ‘We’re thrilled to be partnering with E! Entertainment and Showcase to bring the Gemini Awards back to Toronto this year.’
