Canwest is shutting down CoolTV, and will pull the plug on the jazz-centric cable channel next month, shortly before what would have been its fifth anniversary.

The company announced the shutdown on the digichannel’s website, alluding to lack of growth and profit.

‘We as broadcasters are sometimes left with difficult choices,’ the notice reads. ‘With the decision to discontinue CoolTV, we can now invest more in the channels that have the greatest potential and look forward to bringing our viewers more great specialty programming in the future.’

The Category 2 channel is due to shut down on July 21.
