The L.A.-based film financier TPC has acquired Vancouver-headquartered production finance and advisory firm Media Capital Group (MCG).
The acquisition was effective March 31 after conversations between the companies began in November 2024, MCG co-founder and new TPC Canada managing director Ross Mrazek (pictured centre) tells Playback Daily. No financial details were disclosed.
According to a release, MCG has financed more than 300 films since its 2008 founding by Mrazek and Benjamin Rappaport (pictured right), who is also now serving as TPC Canada managing director. Previous productions the firm had worked on include series such as Crave’s The Trades (Kontent House, Trailer Park Boys Inc., Blink49 Studios) and features like Adam Stern’s Levels (Orbital Mechanics, Middle Child Films, Farpoint Films).
According to the company, TPC Canada is positioned to grow post-acquisition, but Mrazek and Rappaport will continue to run the day-to-day operations with the current roster of contract employees.
The acquisition allows TPC, which also has a London office, to broaden the footprint for its services. The company can now provide its service production vertical as well as other offerings such as post-production accounting, tax advisory and more in Canada.
“[We] have been physically producing or shepherding a lot of production from the U.S. to Canada in the form of television movies and others,” says Mrazek. “So that’s one thing that we’re certainly looking forward to bringing up to existing [and new] TPC clients … coming up from the U.S. and elsewhere, and bringing more production to Canada.”
David Gendron, TPC president and CEO also acknowledged the increased importance of having a Canadian footprint given the instability caused by the ongoing U.S. trade war.
“If we were not [present in Canada,] I think it would be more challenging in today’s very polarizing environment that we’re living in,” says Gendron (pictured left). “It really supports the goal of us being global, not just being an American company.”
