Global heavy on summer drama

Three new scripted dramas will take their place in primetime this summer on Global, which has unveiled a partial schedule underlining the premieres of U.S. series In Plain Sight, Swingtown and the buzzed-about homegrown Durham County.

All are slotted for 10 p.m., with In Plain Sight, about a U.S. marshal working in the Witness Protection Program, looking to lure viewers away from reruns of CTV’s Law & Order: SVU on Tuesdays starting June 17. The ’70s-set drama Swingtown will debut June 5 in simulcast with CBS, airing on Thursdays opposite new eps of Law & Order: CI.

Durham County, starring Hugh Dillon as a troubled detective on the hunt for a serial killer, will kick off the summer for Global next week on Victoria Day, May 19, where it will likely do well in the Monday slot, facing mostly reruns of CSI: Miami. The crime drama previously aired on The Movie Network/Movie Central.

The $15-million miniseries Burn Up, starring Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Neve Campbell (Scream), makes its debut on Global on Tuesday, June 10 at 9 p.m. and concludes the following night. Produced by Calgary’s Seven24 Films, the timely thriller follows the politics of climate change, focusing on environmental activists and oil company executives. It counters reruns of Criminal Minds and the younger-skewing reality series So You Think You Can Dance on CTV.

Among reality programs, Global will air NBC’s Last Comic Standing on Thursdays beginning next week, while season 10 of Big Brother premieres Sunday, July 13 at 8 p.m.

A Global spokesperson says the network will announce other new summer fare in the coming weeks.
