Entertainment One has picked up the Canada and U.K. rights to two titles from London-based sales operation HanWay Films, including a copro based on the exploits of 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic ski jumping oddity Eddie the Eagle. E1-owned Seville Pictures has all rights in Canada, while its London-based Contender Films has all for the U.K. and Ireland.
Slated for production this winter in Calgary and the U.K., Eddie the Eagle will star Brit comedian Steve Coogan as bespectacled ski-jumping no-hoper Michael Edwards. The film is under the direction of Declan Lowney (Little Britain) from a screenplay by Sean Macaulay. Producers are John Heyman of London’s World Film Services, Rupert Maconick of U.S.-based Saville Productions and Roy Krost of Vancouver-based Silver Screen International.
In a statement, Seville co-president John Hamilton predicted an enthusiastic reception for the story of Edwards, who was the first Brit to ski jump at the Olympics.
The other title is Franklyn, currently in post, featuring Ryan Phillippe (Stop-Loss), Eva Green (Casino Royale) and Sam Riley, who debuted last year in Control, the biopic of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis. The film is produced by Jeremy Thomas of Recorded Picture Company and directed by Gerald McMorrow.
