Page nabs Spirit Award

Though she missed out on an Academy Award, Ellen Page was the darling of Film Independent’s Spirit Awards on Saturday in Los Angeles, where she was named best female lead for her role as a pregnant teenager in Jason Reitman’s indie smash Juno.

Page beat out thesps including Angeline Jolie (A Mighty Heart), Parker Posey (Broken English), Sienna Miller (Interview) and Tang Wei (Lust, Caution).

Juno was named best feature over the Montreal-shot Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There, France’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, A Mighty Heart and Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park. Rookie scribe Diablo Cody was awarded the prize for first screenplay for Juno, about a 16-year-old teenager who sets out to find parents for her unborn child. The film is distributed by Fox Searchlight.

Director Jennifer Baichwal’s Manufactured Landscapes lost out in the documentary category to the U.S.’s Crazy Love, while Toronto’s Tamara Podemski (Four Sheets to the Wind) was beat out by Cate Blanchett in the supporting female category.
