Special Genies for Gulkin, Dupuis

Film veterans Stephan Dupuis and Harry Gulkin will be feted with special prizes at the 2008 Genie Awards, the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television announced Thursday.

Dupuis will be honored for outstanding achievement in makeup design for his prosthetic, makeup and tattoo work on Viggo Mortensen as the mysterious driver Nikolai in David Cronenberg’s Eastern Promises.

The Montreal-born makeup artist’s resume includes RoboCop, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Mrs. Doubtfire. In 1986, he shared an Oscar win for best makeup on Cronenberg’s horror film The Fly. Dupuis also worked on other Cronenberg titles such as eXistenZ, Scanners and A History of Violence.

The recently retired Gulkin, whose career spanned more than 30 years, produced such classic titles as Mordecai Richler’s Jacob Two-Two and the Hooded Fang (1978) and Ted Allan’s Lies My Father Told Me (1975). Lies garnered a Golden Reel Award in 1976 as well as best foreign film Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.

More recently, Gulkin is known for his longtime work at Quebec funder SODEC, where he fostered and championed new film talent. He will receive the special achievement award.

Dupuis and Gulkin will pick up their prizes on March 3 at the Genie Awards gala.
