It’s been four weeks, that must mean the Canadian Television Fund is about due for another round of changes, right? Though, this time, the 12-year-old work-in-progress will get a going-over by the CRTC, which will start public hearings on Feb. 4 about how to fix what may or may not be broken. A ruling on its future is expected from Gatineau later. And so we ask anyone brave enough to speak up:
What will the CRTC do to the CTF?
I can tell you what I think they should do. If it ‘ain’t’ broken, don’t fix it.
Ira Levy
Executive producer/partner, Breakthrough Films and Television
Canadian-made shows are having their best season ever. The quality is there. And so are the audiences. I’m confident that the CRTC will recognize the success we’re having and that the CTF will remain intact.
David Paperny
Executive producer, The Week the Women Went
I really do not think there is a lot to change. In my opinion, the CTF has been very successful. Is it perfect? No. Has the industry responded in adapting the way the fund works? Yes. Every year there are changes to how the fund works, sometimes frustrating producers. But in the end the goal is to have a funding system that is timely, responsive and creates Canadian programming. I am confused by some of the fund’s critics who question the program content, but that is not a fund issue. It’s the broadcasters who decide what programs are licensed which trigger the CTF.
Joe Novak
President & CEO, Joe Media Group
I have no idea what the CRTC will decide over the CTF. I have no doubt that forceful representations from Canadian and Quebec production communities will be heard.

VP production, Zone3 & APFTQ chair
There’s no way I’m touching
that question!
