The Screen Actors Guild will boldly go where the Golden Globes and People’s Choice Awards — and maybe even the Oscars — dare not venture. On Jan. 27, a full-bore awards presentation will be broadcast on Sun TV across Canada, and on TBS and TNT south of the border.
For reasons that remain murky, the union that represents screen performers was granted the sort of strike-be-damned waiver the Writers Guild of America refused to give to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for its Golden Globe Awards or to organizers of the People’s Choice Awards.
The result will be a two-hour broadcast, from 8-10 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27, beamed live from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center, and celebrating SAG’s own 75th anniversary. Sun TV will be the sole Canadian broadcaster, carrying the awards across the country on Rogers Cable, and over the air on Bell ExpressVu and Star Choice.
This will be the third consecutive year Sun TV has carried the SAG Awards. Last year’s show was the most-watched event of the year for the Toronto station.
