Rogers moving Citytv and OMNI

Rogers Communications says it will move Citytv Toronto out of its famous digs on Toronto’s Queen Street West and into a new complex in the city’s Yonge-Dundas Square, where it will share space with OMNI Television.

Speculation has been rife about where the Toronto-based cable giant would move the former CHUM flagship, which it officially took over last month along with the other City stations across the country. The answer came Monday night, when Rogers announced plans to acquire a multi-level complex at the eastern edge of the busy downtown square, the site of a recent rejuvenation effort by the city.

The location, where more and more entertainment events are taking place, is a logical choice given City’s propensity for staging celebrity visits and performances. As well, opportunities abound for marketers to coordinate messages with events via the surrounding giant video boards.

‘We think this building portrays the local, urban and diverse character of Citytv and OMNI Television,’ explains Rogers Media president/CEO Tony Viner, in a statement. ‘We were determined to find a location that would maintain the stations’ presence in the local fabric of the city.’

While no moving date was announced, the real estate deal is set to close some time next month. Rogers picked up the Citys when CTVglobemedia was forced to drop them by the CRTC, as a condition of its purchase of CHUM.
