No smoking at TIFF, province warns

The Toronto International Film festival can consider itself warned.

Recalling, there can be no doubt, Sean Penn’s decision to light up in the middle of a press conference at last year’s fest, Ontario’s minister of health promotion has asked festival co-director Noah Cowan to keep a tighter leash on smoking celebrities.

The letter, sent late last week from Jim Watson, wishes Cowan success during the coming fest but adds that crossing the province’s laws against smoking in public places ‘could result in charges being laid.’

While Penn escaped a fine for last year’s flare up, the Sutton Place Hotel, which hosted the press conference, was fined a reported $605 for improper signage and failing to inform Penn of local laws.

Penn will be back in Toronto to promote his latest film Into the Wild, which will have its world premiere at TIFF on Sept. 9.
