There’s a flavor of Canadiana among the special presentations at the Toronto International Film Festival, which on Thursday announced another eight films in this year’s program.
Alberta will be in the spotlight throughout The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which shot in Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg last year. The $30-million western, directed by Andrew Dominik (Chopper) stars Brad Pitt as James and Casey Affleck (Ocean’s Thirteen) as Ford.
Also unspooling as a special presentation is the Vancouver-shot Battle in Seattle, from actor-turned-director Stuart Townsend (Head in the Clouds). The drama, about the 1999 anti-globalization protests, was coproduced by Vancouver’s Insight Film Studios (Blood Ties) and Montreal’s Remstar Productions (Le secret de ma mère).
Also at this year’s TIFF, London, ON native Paul Haggis (Crash, Million Dollar Baby) returns with his war drama In the Valley of Elah — starring Tommy Lee Jones and Susan Sarandon as parents trying to uncover the mysterious disappearance of their son upon his return from Iraq. The film also features Charlize Theron (Monster), Josh Brolin (Grindhouse) and James Franco (Spider-Man).
Other titles in this year’s lineup include the British romance Atonement, which reunites Pride and Prejudice director Joe Wright with leading lady Keira Knightley; Sean Penn’s adventure Into the Wild; and Todd Haynes’ musical drama I’m Not There, about songwriting legend Bob Dylan, which shot in Montreal.
Rounding out the selections are the dramedy Margot at the Wedding from director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale), starring Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh, and the drama The Savages, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman. The festival runs Sept. 6-15.
