the burning question

You can’t fool us. Publicly, everyone may condemn piracy, but we’ve got a feeling that most of you know your way around BitTorrent. And yet, stealing is a touchy subject. And Cineplex or Warner Bros. might be reading this, so enjoy this special, all-anonymous edition of Burning Question, in which we ask:

‘Do you watch pirated movies and TV shows?’

!!

I’m a frequent downloader of pirated television. And many thousands of people have downloaded pirate copies of my work. I couldn’t be happier. If someone downloads a pirated episode and loves it, he or she will tell their friends, who will then seek the series out on TV.

‘Mario’

Series writer/showrunner

No, I don’t. It’s too much work. I don’t have the desire to seek out pirated content when there are, at this point, so many legitimate multi-platform portals of content available.

‘Julia’

Broadcast executive

Sure. Some movies and a lot of TV shows, usually when I can’t get them up here, but not always. Like, I downloaded The Da Vinci Code because I was sort of curious about it, but not curious enough to pay money.

‘Jorge’

Entertainment reporter

Yes, I watch pirated content on the web. It’s easy to use and extremely convenient. Traditional broadcasters have to catch up in a hurry.

‘T.B.’

Broadcast executive

I do. Until there’s a legal, reasonable portal to access the content, I think people will continue to source it themselves. Think of music. Everyone was running around stealing it and, now, I haven’t stolen any music in the last four years.
