Ed Barreveld, co-founder of Toronto-headquartered, non-fiction-focused prodco Storyline Entertainment, and Jules Arita Koostachin, director of 2023’s WaaPaKe, will be recognized for their contributions to documentary by the DOC Institute, the Ontario chapter of the Documentary Organization of Canada.
Storyline CEO Barreveld (pictured left) is the recipient of the Rogers-DOC Luminary Award, while Koostachin (pictured, right) will receive the DOC Vanguard Award. Both will be presented as part of the DOC Institute’s 11th annual Honours Awards to be held in Toronto on Dec. 4.
The DOC Institute’s Luminary Award is presented to an individual whose leadership and creative spirit has made a significant contribution to the doc genre, while the Vanguard Award recognizes an emerging or mid-career professional whose artistic sensibility and visionary approach has made them a talent to watch.
The honourees were chosen by juries of their peers, with jurors including 2023 Luminary recipient Janice Dawe, 2023 Vanguard recipient Noura Kevorkian and Sun-Kyung Yi, a director-producer and founder of the Documentary Filmmaking Institute at Ontario’s Seneca Polytechnic.
Emmy-winning producer Barreveld, who co-founded Storyline Entertainment in 2000, has been behind such titles as 2008’s Tiger Spirit, 2012’s Herman’s House and The World Before Her, 2016’s League of Exotique Dancers, 2017’s Dolphin Man and 2022’s Queen of the Deuce.
A member of the Attawapiskat First Nation, Koostachin is an award-winning filmmaker, writer, performance artist and academic who has directed a number of acclaimed documentary and narrative features and shorts. Her most recent non-fiction feature, NiiMisSak: Sisters in Film, a celebration of Indigenous women storytellers in the film and television industry, will make its world premiere next month at the Whistler Film Festival in B.C.
Koostachin is represented by The Characters Talent for acting, and Lucas Talent for writing and directing.
