Standing up to Spidey worked out well for Sarah Polley and the distributors of Away From Her, which drew healthy box office grosses of $90,900 in Canada and another US$80,100 from the States during its opening week face-off against the super-powered Sony sequel.
North of the border, that works out to a pleasing per screen average of $10,100, putting it far and away on top of the other domestic films for the week ending May 10. The picture is jointly handled here by Mongrel Media and Capri Releasing, and by Lionsgate in the U.S.
Spider-Man 3, which shattered records in Hollywood, made a cool $15.8 million in Canada, playing on 429 screens. A large-format version also played at two IMAX locations, the gross from which puts Spidey’s take for the week just a few dollars short of $16 million.
The week did not go as well for Lucky You from Warner Bros., which debuted at number eight with receipts of $256,000.
Among domestic titles, the chart saw few changes. After six weeks A vos marques… Party! is losing steam for Christal Films, though it hung on to the number two for the week with $68,100, followed by Alliance Atlantis’s Sharkwater, at $12,300.
K Films Amérique entered the chart at number four with the eco doc Un Fleuve Humain, which scored $4,700 from a single screen in Montreal, followed by Ma fille, mon ange, down to number five after a brief rally.
