The German film Wild Chicks took two prizes at the close of the Sprockets film festival, which on Sunday ended its tenth installment with an awards ceremony at the Winter Garden Theatre in Toronto.
The film by Vivian Naefe won this year’s feature film award, as voted by audience members, plus the best feature jury award for a film aimed at children aged 12. Based on the book by Cornelia Funke, Wild Chicks is a coming-of-age story about a group of grade five girls who embark on an adventure where they learn about friendship and teamwork.
The other jury winners were: Khan Kluay from Thailand (children aged 8-9) and Kidz in da Hood from Sweden (aged 10-11).
The overwhelming choice for best animated film was the French title Azur et Asmar from director Michel Ocelot, also selected by fest goers.
Shipwrecked won best short for Calgary filmmaker Devon Bolton. The short, about a boy who encounters a very unusual wreck, has garnered numerous accolades at festivals, including last year’s Chicago International Children’s Film Fest.
The winning films in the Jump Cuts Young Filmmakers Showcase, which offers young filmmakers in grades three to 12 a chance to have their short film shown at Sprockets, were Super Zero, Western Spaghetti and Eyelid Sky – The Chase.
‘It’s been a wonderful 10th anniversary for Sprockets,’ said Jane Schoettle, director of youth education and Sprockets, in a release.
The Sprockets International Film Festival for Children was attended by 25,000 children and family members this year and featured 98 films from 28 countries.
