Open Door and HRH Media have sold Independent America: The Two Lane Search for Mom & Pop to the Sundance Channel, where the road trip documentary will have its U.S. premiere on July 4.
The U.S. specialty acquired the doc, which will air as part of its special Independence Day programming, at MIPTV.
‘We are thrilled,’ said Tom Powers, executive producer at Toronto’s Open Door, in a Wednesday release, adding ‘it is a perfect home for the film.’ Open Door recently sold the doc Cracked, Not Broken, by Toronto filmmaker Paul Perrier, to U.S. cable channel HBO, where it aired on March 17.
Independent America follows NBC and CBC veteran Hanson Hosein and his wife, Heather Hughes, as they travel across 32 states while abiding by two rules: they can only do business with mom and pop shops — no Wal-Marts, McDonald’s or Best Westerns — and they can only travel on secondary highways and country roads.
‘This film is our personal declaration of independence,’ said Hosein. Independent America has also been sold to international broadcasters in Japan, New Zealand and Australia.
