Sackhoff stars in Blueprint MOW

Regina producer Stephen Onda has wrapped the romantic comedy Be Careful What You Wish For – his second MOW in collaboration with prodco Blueprint Entertainment for Lifetime Television and Global, following last year’s Intimate Stranger.

‘Our first production went so well that we had the beginnings of a very interesting relationship,’ says Onda, adding, ‘I quite enjoy working with them.’ Blueprint’s John Morayniss and Ira Pincus are executive producers.

Directed by David Winkler (Finding Graceland) from a script by Nancey Silvers (The Elizabeth Smart Story) and Ron Fassler, Be Careful stars Katee Sackhoff – better known as the tough-as-bullets Starbuck on Battlestar Gallactica – as a high schooler who dreams of marrying her beau, played by Sage Brocklebank (Smallville). When she makes a wish upon the moon, it goes awry and the unsuspecting teenagers flash forward to their wedding 20 years in the future, with neither prepared for what adulthood has in store.

Onda says he was blown away by Sackhoff’s comedic turn in the movie, noting, ‘I wouldn’t equate Katee as a romantic comedy lead, but she was a happy surprise.’

Shooting a comedy was also unknown territory to Onda, whose resume reveals mainly dramas and thrillers such as the 2004 MOW I’ll Be Seeing You and the recent feature Ferris Wheel, which also shot in Regina, produced by and starring Charlize Theron.

‘I learned a lot [doing comedy]. It plays very quickly, so the amount of material that needs to be shot is greater than your standard thriller,’ he says.

Be Careful, which wrapped April 1 after two and a half weeks in Regina and Moose Jaw, is being posted at Regina’s Talking Dog Studios and Java Post Production, with a delivery date set for June 15. The film will air on Lifetime at the end of June, though no airdate for Global has been set.

Onda, meanwhile, is in preproduction on the action-thriller Surveillance, exec produced by David Lynch, to be directed by his daughter Jennifer Lynch. It goes to camera April 23.
