A zombie horror comedy — though not the one you’re probably thinking of — will open the Canadian Filmmakers Festival when it unspools later this month in Toronto.
The fourth annual fest, which returns March 22-25 to various theaters around the city, is set to open with The Mad by Toronto’s Johnny Kalangis. The film is a horror spoof starring Billy Zane (Titanic), Maggie Castle (Weirdsville) and Shauna MacDonald (Saint Ralph).
Not to be confused, of course, with Fido, the zombie comedy by B.C.’s Andrew Currie that stars Billy Connolly and Carrie-Anne Moss, and which arrives in theaters on the preceding Friday via TVA Films.
The four-day festival showcases an array of Canuck features and shorts, of which 11 will have their world premieres, including The Mad. Others in the lineup include Daniel O’Connor’s sci-fi comedy Run Robot Run! , Jean Beaudin’s drama Sans elle and Sean Buckley’s documentary The Road, which follows boxer Syd Vanderpool as he fights his way to Las Vegas for a shot at the championship.
The CFF will also host a number of panel discussions with topics centered on the state of the Canadian film industry, screenwriting, and low-budget moviemaking.
Last year, the fest was attended by more than 3,000 moviegoers and film industry professionals.
