No surprise, Ma fille wins the week

The perils of Internet porn struck a nerve with audiences last week, which saw the French-language thriller Ma fille, mon ange debut at the top of the box office with a cool $1.07 million — far outstripping the previous leader, Partition, which slipped to number two among Canadian-mades.

The per-screen average for Ma fille, released by Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm, stands at an eye-popping $12,700 for the frame ending Feb. 22. It’s the story of a college co-ed (Karine Vanasse) who goes missing in the online porn industry, and is subsequently chased by her distraught father (Michel Côté).

Meanwhile, Vic Sarin’s Partition, the only picture in the top five not from Quebec, continued to perform in its third week, taking another $36,900 from 15 screens for a cumulative total of $254,900. It is distributed by Seville Pictures.

The top five for the week is rounded out by The Chinese Botanist’s Daughters, which slipped to number three, a still-persistent Congorama, which has netted some $403,000 after 17 weeks, and the documentary A Force de rêves.
