CBC going for gold with Olympics coverage

CBC’s early coverage of the Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy has generated some big numbers since the Feb. 10 opening ceremonies.

The live Friday afternoon broadcast of the ceremonies brought in about 825,000 viewers for the pubcaster, and close to 150,000 more on CBC Newsworld, according to BBM. CBC reran the opening ceremonies in primetime that same evening to 1.9 million viewers, peaking at more than two million.

The following day – the first of active competition – the live afternoon coverage brought an average of 1.7 million, peaking at 2.2 million during Jennifer Heil’s gold-medal-winning moguls run.

Sunday also peaked at just over two million. Gratifying, says a CBC spokesperson, because ‘it means viewers are staying with the blocks.’

Still on the sports front, Global’s live broadcast of Superbowl XL on Feb. 5 brought in an average national audience of four million, an 11% increase from last year’s game. Global and BBM estimate that nine million Canadians tuned in to the game at some point, not including the people watching in public venues. The game aired three days after another Global ratings success, the premiere of Survivor: Panama Exile Island, which averaged 1.9 million from 8-9 p.m. on Feb. 2.

Global is enjoying the results of its news ratings as well since moving its daily Global National with Kevin Newman to 5:30 p.m. According to BBM, it debuted in its new slot on Feb. 6 to 1.1 million viewers, garnering more than one million in each of the two days that followed, making it the most-watched national news program in the country, according to BBM.

CTV, meanwhile, citing numbers from Nielsen, claims its 11 p.m. CTV National News with Lloyd Robertson is still number one, with an average of one million-plus Feb. 6-9. CBC’s The National averaged 934,000 viewers from Feb. 6-8, according to BBM.
