Feds okay NewsVu

The CRTC has again given CTV the go-ahead to launch CTV NewsVu, a new digichannel that will rebroadcast local newscasts to all corners of the country.

The Commission approved the pitch early this month and has given CTV until 2008 to launch the English-language, Category 2 service. NewsVu was approved once before, back in 2000, but never got off the ground.

The network has been tinkering with its news outlets since last year, when it asked the feds to rewrite the license of CTV Newsnet. The petition was successful and the 24-hour cable channel is no longer required to run headlines in 15-minute cycles.

The CRTC also okayed an application by Insight Sports for The Soccer Net, another Category 2 digital. Insight – controlled by sports magnate Larry Tanenbaum – is also connected to Spotlight, one of the four proposed pay TV channels also seeking CRTC approval.
