Live 8 draws record audiences to CTV

It remains unclear whether G8 leaders were listening, but Canadians were definitely watching.

CTV’s 18-hour broadcast of the Live 8 concerts for African debt relief on July 2 and 3 reached a total of 7.3 million Canadians, one of the largest total audiences for any single program ever aired by the broadcaster.

Reaching an average 1.1 million Canadians per minute, audience numbers peaked at more than two million when Neil Young’s Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World closed Canada’s Live 8 concert in Barrie, ON.

In addition to full coverage of events in Barrie, CTV also brought performances from venues in Johannesburg, Berlin, London, Rome, Paris and London.

In comparison, CTV’s four-hour airing of the tsunami relief concert in January drew some 4 million viewers.

Meanwhile, on Global, 250,000 viewers tuned in to watch the Toronto Molson Indy, won by Brit Justin Wilson, on July 10, up 22% over last year’s viewership among males ages 18-34.

Still with Global, on July 6, the net aired the season finale of lifestyle doc series My Fabulous Gay Wedding. The broadcast attracted 273,000 viewers, down slightly from the 360,000 viewers who tuned in for the show’s premiere in May, but up 21% from the week previous.

On July 30, Global will get at the heart of temporary employment with the premiere of its new homegrown reality series The Office Temps. The 10-part series uses hidden cameras to observe three young temp workers who mistakenly believe they’re working in a real office for the summer. Produced by Toronto-based Lone Eagle Entertainment (Hooked Up) with executive producer Michael Geddes, The Office Temps will air across Canada at 10 p.m.
