Maman Last Call opens strong, Childstar closes

One week into its release by Christal Films, Francois Bouvier’s Maman Last Call has jumped into the number-one spot on the Canadian box-office chart.

The $3.2-million film, released on 88 screens Feb. 11, grossed more than $300,000 over its opening weekend. By the end of its first full week in theaters, its total take stood at $567,321, for a very respectable per-screen average of $6,447.

The drama is based on a novel written by Nathalie Petrowski, a columnist for Quebec newspaper La Presse. Pierre Gendron and Christian Larouche of Christal Films produce.

Meanwhile, in English Canada, Don McKellar’s Childstar played its last engagement Feb. 18, after only three weeks on big screens. Its final box-office take stood at $23,623.

On a brighter note, White Noise, a Canada/U.K. coproduction from Vancouver’s Brightlight Pictures, is just shy of the $5-million mark for distributor TVA Films. As of Feb. 17, the suspense thriller, starring Michael Keaton, had already grossed over $4.5 million and remained at 28 theatres.

Next month, TVA will also release Clean, a Canada/France/U.K. copro. The feature from French director Olivier Assayas will hit theaters in Vancouver and Toronto March 4. Partly shot in Hamilton, ON, the film stars Nick Nolte and Maggie Cheung, and also features McKellar.

Also on March 4, the English-language version of the family film Daniel and the Superdogs will hit screens in Montreal and the rest of the country. The French version was released in Quebec on Feb. 25.

Also to be released next month is the sci-fi comedy Phil the Alien from first-time director Rob Stefaniuk. The film is slated for a March 11 release by Lions Gate Films, which picked up the low-budget feature at the 2004 Toronto International Film Festival. On March 18, Christal will release La Vie avec mon père, and on March 25, Odeon releases Saint Ralph.
