Trailer trash is tops

Julian, Ricky, Bubbles and the Sunnyvale gang have taken Topsail Entertainment and Trailer Park Productions straight to the top, with the season four finale of Trailer Park Boys coming in as the highest-rated English-Canadian specialty show in five years.

More than 680,000 viewers tuned in to Showcase on May 30 to watch the finale, which ranked 10th among all episodes of Canadian dramatic series across English-Canadian national networks for 2003/04.

Meanwhile, CTV’s star-search series Canadian Idol premiered to an audience of more than 2.2 million on May 25, a 14% increase over last year’s premiere. Episode two, which aired June 2, attracted 2.17 million viewers, 15% more than the second episode last year.

And with the Calgary Flames sticking it out to the bitter end, CBC attracted the highest average audience for the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 1989/90. The average audience for the finals was 3.7 million, up 148% over last year, when there were no Canadian teams playing.

Approximately 5.7 million Canadians tuned in to watch game seven, with 4.9 million glued to the tube for the entire pre- and post-game shows, which totaled almost four hours of viewing. In 1994, when Vancouver took on the Rangers, 5.4 million tuned in to watch the game itself, with just under five million staying for the whole show. The average audience for the entire playoffs was 2.2 million, up 35% over last year.
