Finales win the day for Global

While the final episodes of American hit sitcoms Friends and Frasier, as well as America’s Tribal Council, the postscript special to Survivor All-Stars, drew huge audiences to Global in early May, the broadcaster has lost two of its most valuable primetime shows and it will be a few months before yet another Survivor sets up shop on whatever remote island comes next.

The hour-long finale of Friends drew more than five million viewers to Global on May 6. Frasier’s final goodbye attracted 1.7 million May 14, the same night more than three million Canadians stayed tuned to watch America choose its favorite survivor.

Meanwhile, as CTV’s Canadian Idol gears up for a summer roll, indigenous comedy was the ratings success story for the broadcaster over this past season.

Although competing with the NHL Playoffs, CTV’s original comedy series Corner Gas drew 1.5 million viewers on April 21 and 1.3 million viewers to its season finale on April 28. The Saskatchewan-produced show has consistently attracted an average 1.5 million viewers throughout its first season and season two is currently in production.
