The Collector tops Leo noms

Vancouver: The coroner was beaten by the Grim Reaper in the nominations race in the 2004 Leo Awards, which recognize excellence by B.C. residents in the film and television industry.

The Collector, a new series for CHUM about a man who collects dead souls, collected 21 nominations in the best drama category, including best drama series, direction and cinematography, beating out perennial Leo favorite Da Vinci’s Inquest, which managed 11 noms, including best drama, direction, writing and three nods in the best actor category.

Stargate SG-1 got 16 nods, including drama and multiple nominations in direction, visual effects and acting, and the CBC miniseries Human Cargo brought in 13, including best drama, direction, writing, and score.

Feature films Emile and The Snow Walker each earned 11 nominations in the feature-length drama category, pitted against each other for best drama feature, direction and writing.

Suspino – A Cry for Roma leads the documentary category with eight nominations, going head-to-head with the high-profile doc The Corporation, which has six noms.

The Big Charade leads the usually hotly contested short film category with 11 nominations. In the best music, comedy or variety program, Western Alienation Comedy Hour leads with six nominations.

The Leos, which had a record-setting 896 entries this year, will announce 85 winners in 16 categories in a two-night event May 28 and 29 at Vancouver’s Westin Bayshore Resort & Marina.
