Montreal: The Ontario Film Review Board has denied an appeal filed by the distributors of French film Baise-moi. The film is currently on screens in b.c. and Quebec but won’t be shown in Ontario unless several offending scenes are cut and the film is resubmitted to the ofrb by Canadian distributor Remstar.
The board cited the film’s ‘extremely deleterious psychological impact on the visceral [level]’ and its ‘frequent and prolonged violence.’
Baise-moi is a hardcore, violent story of two women out on the town on a sexually charged killing spree. It has been widely panned by critics for its pretentious subject matter and amateurish production values. Described by its promoters as new wave punk, the movie is much closer to a remake of the commercial, rape-revenge flicks produced in Japan and Hong Kong.
Baise-moi is based on the self-described ‘trash’ novel by Virginie Despentes, who co-directed along with Coralie Trinh Thi.
The film has been banned in France and was pulled suddenly last month from Famous Players theatres in Montreal after a distraught moviegoer forced his way into a projection booth and destroyed the print.
Baise-moi was initially released in eight theatres in Quebec where it has earned close to $250,000. *
