Jolly Roger reinvents itself

Toronto commercial production company Jolly Roger is no more. According to Jolly Roger executive producer James Davis, the company is being dissolved and reformed by himself and Peter Davis under a new name. The new shop retains the same roster of directors, minus one: big shooter Steve Chase, who has been repped by Jolly Roger since it opened its doors six years ago.

There is no word yet as to where Chase will look next for Canadian representation, or whether he will stay within The Partners’ Film Company’s group of production houses. Jolly Roger is a Partners’ company, with Partners’, Chase, and James and Peter Davis one-third partners in profit participation. Partners’ and the Davis’ will retain profit participation in the new entity, but with Chase leaving, the company has to be renamed.

Jolly Roger was formed in late 1994, heralding Chase as its star director. Its roster in its final days included David Tennant, Curtis Wehrfritz, Robert Logevall, John Mastromonaco and Wayne Craig, who remain with the company under its new name.

The Jolly Roger roster has been responsible for its share memorable spots, including ads for Vaseline Intensive Care, Nike, Pontiac, Royal LePage, Molson, and many others. *
