*Shavick extends deadline
Shavick Entertainment has extended the entry deadline to April 21 for the 2nd annual Shavick Award for Best Emerging Director in Western Canada. Also, the award is now open to films produced more than one year ago; applicants from last year can resubmit.
First place wins $10,000. Second and third place runners-up will be awarded $5,000 and $2,000, respectively.
New this year will be the Heritage Award, which recognizes the achievements by an individual working in the film industry in Western Canada. Shavick will donate $5,000 to a charity chosen by the winner.
Entry forms for the awards may be obtained from Shavick Entertainment at (604) 874-4300.
*OAB honors Ontario stations
The Ontario Association of Broadcasters handed out numerous awards Sunday, March 5, as part of its annual awards ceremony. Recipients included Toronto’s CFMT-TV, honored as Television Broadcaster of the Year, and Hamilton’s ontv, winner of the Howard Caine Public Service Memorial Award and the OAB Award for Community Service.
The Caine prize, which recognizes public service apart from broadcasting, went to ontv news anchor Connie Smith. The community service award marks the station’s fundraising and telethon work during its seven-year-old partnership with the Children’s Hospital of Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation.
