Burnett tops Marbles

Nintendo’s ‘Happy Together’ commercial, starring Super Mario, Donkey Kong and other familiar faces from video game land, took best of show at the second annual Golden Marble Awards. Created by Leo Burnett usa and directed by Mark Story out of Crossroads, the spot also won for best electronic video game commercial.

The Golden Marbles, honoring excellence in North American children’s advertising, were held Sept. 9 at Chelsea Piers in New York.

Judges reviewed more than 350 entries in 36 categories this time around and selected 22 gold winners.

Vancouver’s Palmer Jarvis ddb took home a handful of trophies for its playful Playland creative, including best overall tv campaign.

The ‘Turbulence’ spot was named best entertainment venue commercial.

pjdds’s Playland effort also won best overall radio commercial and tied with Young & Rubicam, Toronto, for best overall out-of-home advertising.

TBWA/Chiat Day’s ‘Stick People,’ directed by Larry August of Toronto’s Maxx Films, scooped the best creative play commercial award. Simon Mestel was the dop, TOPIX/Mad Dog did the animation and Panic & Bob’s David Hicks handled the post.

‘Dogman’ for Fusion earned gold in the category of snack food commercial. Peter Montgomery of Sparks Productions, Toronto, directed and Robin Miller was the dop. t/md’s James Cooper handled the animation and Peter McAuley edited at The Daily Post. Leo Burnett coined the creative.

Best public service announcement went to Publicis/smw and Concerned Children’s Advertisers for ‘The Hidden World of the House Hippo,’ directed by Tim Hamilton out of Avion Films, Toronto. Toronto’s Spin Productions handled effects.

Ogilvy & Mather won gold for best doll commercial with ‘Barbie Be Anything’ for Mattel, directed by Giraldi/Suarez’s Bob Giraldi. Best non-electric game commercial went to a Griffin Bacal spot for Hasbro’s Totally Twister, directed by N UR Eye Films’ Ernie Mosteller.

Best breakfast food commercial went to Campbell Mithun Esty for Hostess’ ‘The Last Donut,’ directed by Don Rase of Backyard Productions.

Tied for best beverage commercial were fcb, Chicago’s ‘Michael vs. Mia’ ad for Gatorade and bbdo, New York’s ‘Talk’ for Pepsi Cola’s Mountain Dew. HIS Productions’ Sam Bayer directed the Gatorade spot and rsa/usa’s David Dorkin helmed the Dew action.

fcb won a second gold, best food commercial, for its ‘Platypus’ spot for Kraft Easy Mac. Satellite Films’ Spooner & French directed.

Ammirati Puris Lintas’ ‘Carnival’ for Burger King was the winner in the quick service restaurant category. Steve Horn of Steven and Linda Horn Productions directed.
