Chiapas doc signs American deal

Vancouver: A Place Called Chiapas (by Vancouver’s Canada Wild Productions) has picked up a u.s. distributor after two successful weeks at the Film Forum in New York in November.

According to Chiapas director/producer Nettie Wild, Zeitgeist Films of New York bought the u.s. rights when the documentary broke through the magic box office threshold of us$20,000 per week. A feature documentary about the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas, Mexico, the film earned us$41,000 during the two-week run.

To inaugurate the deal, Chiapas will open theatrically in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Chicago and Washington in February.
