Jewison honored

The Canadian Film Centre has named its founder Norman Jewison as the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, a biennial honor established to pay tribute to those who have made significant international contributions to film, television and new media.

In addition to the award itself, the cfc, celebrating its 10th year, has established a training scholarship in the recipient’s name to be used in the discipline of their choice.

Governor General Romeo LeBlanc will present the inaugural award at a gala Nov. 9 at Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum. The event, hosted by Eugene Levy, will be broadcast as a one-hour special by Global Television.

Following a cocktail reception and dinner will be a short presentation featuring highlights from Jewison’s career and tributes from such stars as Harry Belafonte, Nicholas Cage, Danny DeVito, Whoopi Goldberg, Don Harron, Goldie Hawn, Sidney Poitier, Martin Scorsese and Chaim Topol.

Those on hand to toast Jewison in person include Carl Anderson, Alan Arkin, Margot Kidder, Bruce McDonald, Rod Steiger and Haskell Wexler.

Royal Bank Financial Group is the presenting sponsor and Air Canada is the associate sponsor of the Canadian Film Centre Lifetime Achievement Award. Global Television is the media sponsor and Cineplex Odeon Corporation, 5 King West, IATSE Local 873, Viacom Canada and Famous Players are silver sponsors.
