A number of well-known Canadians have been relieved of their duties on the Twentieth Century Fox feature A Cool Dry Place, which shot in and around Toronto last summer as well as posting here until the dismissals in late March. Sources close to the production say the film’s lead actor Vince Vaughn has been given the reins to edit a cut.
Director John N. Smith (The Boys of St. Vincent, Dangerous Minds) is now off the Midwest-set drama helmed by exec producer David Coatsworth. Also affected by the housecleaning are picture editor Susan Shipton (The Sweet Hereafter, Final Offer) and sound effects and dialogue editors from Tattersal Sound.
The film’s composer, American musician Mike Mills of rem, is also off the picture.
Fox execs reportedly gave Vaughn a chance to edit his own cut of A Cool Dry Place after the Swingers star was unhappy with a studio cut he saw of the picture. Production sources say the studio version was done after a director’s cut failed to score well with a California test screening audience.
Heather Macgillivray, director of publicity at Fox’s Toronto office, issued a no comment when questioned about the situation. Fox’s motion picture publicity department in California did not return phone calls.
