*ACTRA Film Society

The newly-formed Actra Film Society screened a pristine 35 mm print of Don Shebib’s 1970 landmark film Goin’ Down the Road on Oct. 2 at Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario to mark the society’s official launch.

ACTRA Film Society president John Boylan says the group plans to offer regular screenings of Canadian and international films to give those working in the Canadian industry an opportunity to come together to celebrate their work.

The screenings will also include shorts from the Canadian Film Centre and Colleen Murphy’s Shoemaker is expected to be the next film unspooled at the AGO Oct. 13.

*Critics team up

A collection of Toronto-area film critics have formed the Toronto Film Critics Association and named Cameron Bailey as president.

At the end of each year, the tfca will host an awards ceremony honoring the best films released in Toronto that year.

The first annual Toronto Film Critics Awards will take place in January 1998.
