Letters: No rebroadcast plans for Valour, says Beatty

i was interested to note the comments in your June 19 Quebec Scene by Leo Rice-Barker regarding the McKenna brothers’ documentary The Valour and The Horror.

Rice-Barker quotes Brian McKenna as commenting that he ‘expects the public broadcaster (cbc) to honor its commitment to rebroadcast the controversial six-hour Valour documentary.’

Your readers may be interested to know that I received confirmation by letter on April 28 from cbc president Perrin Beatty which states that ‘the cbc has no plans to rebroadcast the series. Should that change, the commitments made by the former officers of the Corporation regarding the program’s need to conform to cbc journalistic policy would be respected.’

Mr. Beatty is referring to the 1992 Report of the cbc Ombudsman on this series, which found it to be flawed and not up to cbc broadcast standards. A commitment was made at that time that the series would not be rebroadcast until changes were made to correct these flaws.
